Some time ago, my son Sam reached the age when he would have alot of fun with a cubby house. I think alot of us had one when we were young. Being an average Aussie family with lots of bills and little money to spare, we thought of getting a secondhand one.
Easy? No - it was not easy. Any spare time we had was spent hunting suburb to suburb, trying to find an average cubby around the $300 mark. We saw everything - some had graffiti on the walls, some were made of bits and pieces, others had the roof sitting on loose bricks. After spending about $80 on fuel we decided it was a waste of time, so the only real option was a new one. But we were shocked to discover they were all about $800-$900!
Starting to wish we had never thought about a cubby and wishing we had never mentioned it to Sam our son, we looked for a last resort - Work out how to build one!
Luckily, I had building experience, so we hunted around for some inexpensive timber and some hardware supploes. Out came our tools, and away we went. Two weekends later, there it was: a brand new cubby with colourbond gable roof, complete with veranda and picket fence. Sam still uses it to this day. We built another for a friend, and our business just grew from there.
Even today, I can build a cubby for around $400. My wife and I have built so many for kids now we feel lucky to have created ourselves such great jobs. We hugely enjoy the satisfaction our cubbies give the kids. They have so much fun!
We are a small family business with low overheads and no salesmen. We have no new cars and no factory leases, and can produce cubbies at very affordable prices. Since we can only produce a limited a number in a year, think ahead when it comes to birthdays or special occasions. Book your own cubby as early as possible so that we can make you happy. |
